People is the plural form of person. We say:
- One person , but two, three, four people.
It is true that persons is sometimes used as a plural of person in official language. There is also a singular noun people (plural peoples) meaning “nation” , “religion” or “race”, and in those cases, it is used as a singular noun and can be used in a singular and plural form:
- ““The Sami is a native people living in an area covering parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia”.
- “The Buddhists are a welcoming and hospitable people“.
- “At college, he took a course on the history of the peoples of the British Isles”.
However, this usage of PEOPLE is not frequent. What we normally see is that person is singular and people is its plural form. Consider these examples:
- “There were two people at the bus stop”.
- “This summer I met one person from India and two people from Argentina”.
Therefore, these examples below are INCORRECT:
- People is full of joy at Christmas.
- Some people watches too much TV these days.
